Master Artist Blacksmith Arrin Matthews Installs Historic Cemetery Signs on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina
Daufuskie Island, SC—June 30, 2025 – Arrin Matthews of John Boyd Smith Metal Studios is proud to announce the installation of five custom cemetery signs created to honor and preserve the heritage of Daufuskie Island, one of South Carolina’s most historically rich and culturally significant sites.
Last week, Matthews and his team completed the project, marking a major milestone in the island’s ongoing efforts to restore and celebrate its sacred landmarks. Each handcrafted sign reflects the area’s deep Gullah roots, blending artistry and reverence to commemorate generations of families who shaped the island’s story.
“It was an unbelievable honor to take part in Daufuskie Island’s history and to witness such a momentous occasion,” said Matthews. “This community has a unique way of making you feel like family, and it was a privilege to contribute to something so meaningful.”
The project represents more than artistry—it stands as a testament to collaboration, culture, and craftsmanship. Through traditional blacksmithing techniques and meticulous design, Matthews continues to demonstrate his commitment to preserving historic spaces across the region.
